As we launch into another exciting round of mentor-mentee pairings in the Sparks Mentorship Program, we thought it might be helpful to flip the script for a moment—and share some wisdom from your mentors' point of view.
After mentoring dozens of Sparks Students, we've noticed certain patterns. The most successful mentorships don't just happen by chance—they're the result of intention, effort, and a willingness to engage deeply. Spoiler alert: It's not about being the smartest or most polished. It's about showing up with curiosity, honesty, and a desire to grow.
So here's what we, your mentors, have learned really makes the difference:
1. Show Up Consistently (Even When You're Busy or Unsure)
Life is full—between school, jobs, and everything else you're juggling, we know it's not always easy to carve out time. But showing up regularly (even when you feel like you have nothing major to report) builds momentum and trust. Consistency sends the message: I value this relationship. Need to reschedule? Totally okay—just give us a heads-up.
Be reachable and responsive with email communications—this shows professionalism and respect for the relationship we're building together. Remember: we're cheering you on, but we're balancing busy lives too. Treating this like a real-world professional relationship helps both of us grow.
2. Come With Questions, Not Just Updates
We love hearing about your wins—but what really makes mentorship click is when you bring us your questions. That's where the magic happens. Whether it's "How did you prioritize during college?" or "What would you do in my shoes?"—curiosity opens the door to meaningful dialogue. Updates are good. Questions are better.
3. Be Honest About Where You're Struggling
We're not here to grade you. We've made mistakes, doubted ourselves, and faced tough decisions too. Vulnerability isn't a weakness—it's a fast track to growth. The more real you are about where you're stuck, the more we can help you move forward.
4. Take Notes, Follow Up, and Close the Loop
Did we recommend a book, a podcast, or someone you should meet? Jot it down. Even better—circle back next time and share what came of it. This follow-through shows you're engaged and taking action. Plus, it helps us better tailor our support to your needs.
5. Ask About Our Journey—Specifically
We love sharing our experiences, but big, vague questions can be hard to answer. Get specific: "What's a lesson you learned the hard way?" or "What surprised you most in your career path?" That's where the richest insights tend to live.
6. Think Beyond the Now
We're happy to talk about your internship, job search, or next class schedule—but don't stop there. Let's dream a little. What kind of work lights you up? Where do you want to be in 10 years? What kind of life are you building? When we understand the bigger picture, we can help you chart a clearer path.
7. Share Your World With Us
Believe it or not, you bring just as much to the table. Your fresh take on tech, culture, and work is something we learn from too. Don't hold back from sharing what you're seeing and thinking—it creates a two-way relationship, which is the best kind.
8. Treat This as a Practice Ground for Professionalism
This is a safe space to sharpen your communication skills, build confidence, and learn how to navigate the professional world. Use it! Whether it's crafting thoughtful emails or voicing your goals clearly—what you practice here will serve you everywhere.
9. Make It a Relationship, Not a Calendar Invite
Some of the best mentorship moments happen between the meetings. Shoot us a quick update on your latest win, send over an article that connects to our conversations, or ask a one-off question. These little touches build connection and momentum over time.
10. Start Paying It Forward Now
You don't need a fancy job title to start giving back. Mentor a peer. Volunteer. Be generous with what you're learning. One of the most rewarding parts of mentorship is watching mentees grow into mentors themselves—it shows us you truly get it.
Remember: We're On Your Team
We chose to be mentors because we genuinely care about your success. This isn't about judgment or comparison—it's about walking alongside you, offering perspective, and helping you navigate the journey ahead.
The best mentorships aren't transactional—they're transformational. They feel more like conversations with a wise friend than a formal checklist. So come with curiosity, show up authentically, and know this: we're all in on your growth.
What's one thing you could do differently to get more out of your next mentorship meeting? What's a challenge or question you've been hesitant to bring up—but might lead to a breakthrough?
